Why take language courses as an OpenYUFE student?
Read below Jaqueline’s experiences on language studies in YUFE:
“My name is Jaqueline, and I’m currently a student at Sorbonne Nouvelle University. So far, I have taken two language courses with YUFE offered by the University of Eastern Finland: Russian 1 and Chinese 1. The main reason why I chose these languages is that, I have never even considered learning them at all. While I am passionate about languages, I hadn’t succeeded in learning anything since a while ago. So, when I saw that I could take free online courses with YUFE and, that some of the languages offered were Chinese and Russian, I was really intrigued, for they were entirely new to me, so I decided to take them. First, I enrolled to Russian 1.
I was afraid of finding it difficult to make time for learning a language from scratch, but I was positively surprised. While the modules could be quite intensive, but the fact that the live courses took place once every other week made it fairly easy to manage. I really liked the course and the feedback was thorough and helpful. For Chinese 1, the experience is quite different, though I like it just as much. We had far more frequent live sessions, and since the language is phonetically different to any European language, we have been focusing on pronunciation and basic vocabulary and phrases. Although of course the language is not exactly easy, the professor helps us fight our shyness while encouraging us to actively participate, and gives a lot of feedback. Overall, I have had a great experience with YUFE’s language courses offered by UEF and it is something I would recommend to any OpenYUFE student that looks forward to learn a new language, since the quality is top notch and they are flexible enough for a student living abroad to manage.”
