The doctoral school at my university, the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), organises monthly “doctoral morning coffees.” There are also online events to keep doctoral students informed and build connections. One meeting was devoted wholly to YUFE opportunities for doctoral researchers at UEF. Another one provided information on the YUFE doctoral pilot, among other things.
To join the YUFE doctoral pilot, I needed to fill out a form asking questions about my background, career goals and expectations from the program. I also needed the supervisor’s consent to work on the supervision plan together.
My goal of participating in this pilot was – and is – to explore European academia and build connections, both at my university and with other YUFE participants. The program has two dimensions: all YUFE events and meetings at my university. I participate in everything at UEF and pick those YUFE events that suit my goals. It is only the beginning, but I would say that self-reflection and a feeling of connection to others are the main takeaways for now. We are planning a career day for doctoral researchers, so I am looking forward to this.
