BioYUFE turns five in Brussels

8 October 2026

BioYUFE is an initiative in which staff of students from across the YUFE universities with an interest in biology and related fields work together to provide joint education and events.

This group originally formed in September 2021 and celebrated its 5th birthday with a meeting at YUFE headquarters in Brussels on the 14th and 15th of September. Notably, this was the first time that all 10 YUFE Universities participated, and it was a pleasure to welcome the new colleagues and friends from Madrid and Cyprus.

A major highlight of the meeting was the Inclusion of 6 early career researchers, from across the YUFE universities, who had met online as part of the Sustainable Climate-Change Action via Interdisciplinary Research in YUFE (SCAIRY) project. On the Tuesday, they hosted a live online webinar on the role of early career researchers and interdisciplinarity in climate change research, featuring notable guests from academic research, funding and finance.

There was also a focus on the future of BioYUFE, as they begin working on a joint master’s program together which, in a few years’ time, will allow students to become transdisciplinary experts in the use of nature-based solutions for tackling climate change.

It has been fantastic to see this group grow over the past half a decade, and to see the great enthusiasm brought in by both old and new members of the team.
